What the map shows
Every H3 resolution-9 hex (about 0.1 km²) whose centre is on land in Henrico County, the City of Richmond or Chesterfield County: 18,920 hexes. Each hex has walk and drive minutes to the nearest grocery, pharmacy, K-12 school, park, healthcare site, library and bus stop, plus how many of each are reachable within 15 minutes. Destinations just outside the three localities count.
How the score works (0–100)
- Each essential earns its points in full if it is a 15-minute walk (fading to half at 30 minutes, then nothing).
- By car it earns 60% if it is a 5-minute drive, fading to 30% at 15 minutes and to nothing at 30 minutes.
- Each category takes the better of its walk and drive credit. Transit counts only on foot.
- Weights: grocery 20, pharmacy 15, school 15, park 15, healthcare 15, library 10, transit 10.
Travel times
Shortest paths on OpenStreetMap road and path networks, with one-ways respected. Drive speeds are posted speeds scaled down for typical midday conditions (signals, turns, light congestion), not rush hour, plus a fixed 2-minute allowance for parking. Walking is 4.8 km/h on any non-motorway road or path, which measures possibility, not comfort or safety. Parks are measured to the park edge. Minutes are for the centre of each hex, up to about 200 m from a clicked point. Walk times over 90 minutes and drive times over 60 minutes are shown as ">90" and ">60". Minutes are published to one decimal, and each score is computed from exactly those minutes, so the breakdown on every card adds up to its headline score.
Destinations
- Grocery: OSM supermarkets and warehouse clubs. Brand-checked full-service chains are verified. Other OSM-tagged supermarkets are kept but flagged independent, not brand-verified.
- Pharmacy: OSM pharmacies (Rite Aid removed after its 2025 closure). OSM holds roughly 65–90% of the pharmacies in Census business counts, so some pharmacy minutes are pessimistic.
- School: NCES public (2024–25) and private (2023–24) K-12 schools. The nearest school is not necessarily the zoned school.
- Healthcare: hospital emergency departments, freestanding ERs and urgent care from OSM, cross-checked against CMS. Urgent care is probably under-mapped.
- Park: OpenStreetMap parks, plus county parks from the Henrico County and Chesterfield County open-data portals where OSM lacks them. Access is measured to the park edge.
- Library: IMLS public library outlets. Transit: GRTC bus stops with weekday service (stop proximity only, not trip time; other operators are not included).
Map notes
Lighter hexes have no residents (2020 Census). Faded hexes have no mapped road within 1 km of their centre. Population is 2020 Census, apportioned from blocks.
Boundaries: U.S. Census TIGER/Line 2025 counties at full resolution, clipped to the shoreline, not simplified. Built by Apogee Geospatial from public data. Build 15min-life-20260926d.
