What the map shows
– farm fields covering – acres in – of Virginia’s 133 counties and independent cities, from USDA NASS Crop Sequence Boundaries. Click a field for its crop history (2016–2025), soils, slope, FEMA flood-zone share, county drought status and estimated drive times to the nearest grain buyer, livestock auction, farmers market and meat or poultry processor. Below zoom 10 the map shows county summaries.
Field outlines are smoothed for display; acreage, the field card and all downloads use NASS’s original field geometry. County lines are drawn from full-detail TIGER/Line files and are never simplified.
Read with care
- Fields are areas NASS mapped as cropland, hay or pasture in 2018–2025. They are generalized from satellite data and are not legal parcels or FSA farm units. Small or recently converted fields can be missing, and seven urban counties and cities have no fields.
- Crop history is classified from satellite imagery. Corn and soybeans are usually reliable; hay versus pasture, small grains, double crops and minor crops much less so. 2018–2025 are NASS’s field records; 2016–2017 are the majority crop class inside each field (this build).
- 2024–2025 use a new NASS method. USDA changed its crop-mapping method in 2024; hay vs. pasture labels are not comparable with earlier years, and row-crop acres also stepped down. Change figures on this map are headlined for 2016–2023, which used one method throughout.
- Soils (farmland class, NCCPI productivity, drainage, capability class) are soil-survey map-unit ratings, not field measurements or yields.
- Flood shares use FEMA’s regulatory 1%-annual-chance zones (including coastal V zones). Study ages vary widely by county. It is not a flood forecast.
- Drought is the weekly U.S. Drought Monitor at county scale, not field conditions. Map date: –.
- Drive times are estimates on OpenStreetMap roads at typical speeds with no traffic, to the nearest point in this dataset. Grain buyers are limited data: no public statewide list of licensed grain dealers or elevators was found, so only known buyers are mapped (– points), and grain drive times are likely overstated. Farmers market listings are self-reported and may be out of date; processors are federally inspected slaughter plants only.
